The tech giant confirmed Wednesday that it intends to allow customers access to their medical records via iPhones and Apple Watches on iOS 11.3 beta. But like with so many things in the world of highly personal data, putting medical information on a digitally connected device is not without risk — and how it all shakes out could have a huge impact on the lives of millions.

According to CNBC, which broke the story, the new feature will be folded into the Apple Health app. After a health provider is added to the app, the "user taps to connect to Apple's software system."

Does that mean this information passes through Apple's servers before hitting your iPhone, or does it come directly from the provider itself? And how, exactly, is that data protected from hackers or leaks? That, unfortunately, is unclear. This reporter reached out to numerous people at Apple with a series of questions about the new service, but received no response.

This is a problem. If Apple wants people to trust it with details regarding their "allergies, conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures and vitals," as CNBC reports, then it needs to be more forthcoming about how it plans to secure that information.

Mashable was able to confirm that the medical records in question can be kept on an iCloud account — if you opt in — but that otherwise they're stored locally on the device, and protected with the same form of encryption that secures everything else on the device. It's unclear if this is a separate opt-in than the one an iPhone user makes to back files up to iCloud.

It is very possible that you might want your photos backed up to the cloud, but not the details of your embarrassing medical condition. Hopefully Apple plans to give users that flexibility. Unfortunately, however, at this time we don't know.

Risk and reward

While the benefits of having your medical history at your fingertips may be numerous, so are the potential pitfalls. After all, it's not hard to imagine what could go wrong. As the notorious 2014 hack of celebrity iCloud accounts made clear, Apple can't guarantee the safety of your data. Sure, that incident involved targeted phishing, but for many people, a jealous ex is part of a valid threat model — and that's exactly the type of person who would be able to bluff their way into an iCloud account.

That is also the same kind of person who might have physical access to your iPhone or Apple Watch. As soon as they got into one of those devices, your medical records would potentially be up for grabs. To be clear, it's not like your medical data is necessarily safe where it is. We learned in 2014 that hackers had stolen the records of some 4.5 million patients after breaching the systems of an American hospital network.

But, still. Throwing another potential target in the mix in the form of an iPhone or Apple Watch, no matter how secure Apple may claim them to be, doesn't make this reality any better. We reached out to both the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for additional insight, and will update this when and if we hear back.

In the meantime, it's perhaps best to keep in mind that medical records present a unique challenge when it comes to balancing privacy, security, and availability. Not getting them into the hands of your doctor could have disastrous effects, but so could having them fall into the hands of a hacker.

Apple's customers would be better served by an open dialogue on how the company plans to achieve that optimal balance. Until that happens, however, upload your medical records to Apple's cloud at your own risk (Source : Mashable). Don't expect a ton of likes from Tim Cook when it comes to social media. The Apple CEO recently visited Harlow College in the United Kingdom to promote the company's "Everyone Can Code" curriculum. During an interview with The Guardian, he mentioned his nephew, and how he has already set boundaries on the technology he can consume.

"There are some things that I won’t allow; I don’t want them on a social network," said Cook. The Guardian piece does not mention the age of Cook's nephew, but at the time of a 2015 Fortune feature on Cook, he said his nephew was 10 years old.

This is not the first time Cook has expressed concern over social media. In June 2016, Cook gave a commencement speech at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he warned about how social media can turn us "antisocial."

"Sometimes the very technology that is meant to connect us divides us," he said. Interestingly, a big reason for social media's success is directly tied to Apple's iPhone, as more users enjoy their lives through their smartphone. Social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter have been scrutinized since the 2016 presidential election, accused of spreading misinformation and fostering environments where users can be abused.

Last week, Facebook took a series of steps hoping to emphasize positive interactions and to cut back on the spread of news. The company said it was updating its News Feed to surface more posts with higher engagement. They also plan to use community guidance to highlight "trusted sources" for news that would likely appear more prominently.

Meanwhile, Twitter revealed it is exploring ways to reach out to users who may have been exposed to Russian propaganda. During a Senate Commerce hearing, Twitter's director of public policy, Carlos Monje, said the social media service is working to inform users who saw tweets from Russian-linked accounts spreading disinformation during the election.

For parents and caregivers seeking to set social media boundaries, here are some tips: Consider a shared account. This allows parents to track what their kids do while using social media. Establish boundaries early. Before even allowing them to have an account, make sure they know your ground rules. Start a conversation. Ask kids how they plan to use it, and who they plan to interact with on social media.
Facebook’s plan to copy everything that made Snapchat successful is finally reaching its final form with the launch of stories in the main Facebook app. You can now share stories with your Facebook friends and see what your friends have been up to for the past 24 hours.

At the top of the Facebook app, you’ll see rounded profile pictures representing stories by your friends. If you tap on one, it’ll open your friend’s story with photos, videos, drawings and camera effects.

Essentially, Facebook is creating a second newsfeed for the mobile generation. It is swapping text and photo updates with visual communication because it feels more personal.

Once you get access to stories, you’ll find a camera icon in the top left corner of the Facebook app. You can then take photos and pictures, add effects and drawings and share the result. After 24 hours, posts in your story disappear forever. Facebook is also adding new camera effects today.

Facebook is introducing Direct as well, a new inbox for direct messages. It is reminiscent of Snapchat’s direct messages. This way, you can share photos and videos with one or multiple friends in particular, or reply to your friends’ stories.

So Facebook has now added stories to all its main apps — Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp. While Instagram’s stories have been a huge success, let’s see if Facebook’s user base also wants to embrace the story format.

Facebook Stories and Direct are rolling out today. You won’t necessarily see stories straight away, but they’re on their way.
Apple's latest iOS update, rolling out now to iPhone and iPads, adds support for Siri's new news-reading powers. The update, which comes just a few weeks ahead of the HomePod's official launch date, is similar to the daily news briefings you can get via Google Assistant on Google Home speakers.

Saying "hey Siri, give me the news," will start an audio news briefing going over some of the day's top headlines and news stories. The feature uses The Washington Post as a default, according to 9to5Mac, but you can switch over to streams from NPR, CNN and Fox News as well.

Previously, Siri could surface headlines from Apple News or search results, but this marks the first time Apple's assistant is able to deliver audio briefings.

The update is meant to coincide with the upcoming launch of Apple's Siri-enabled HomePod speaker. HomePod owners can use the same "Hey Siri, give me the news," command to get the briefings via the speaker.

News and podcasts are standard features for home speakers, but adding news-reading abilities to Siri on iOS devices is a nice benefit for those who don't want to shell out $349 for a HomePod just yet.

Elsewhere, the update also includes a fix for the so-called chaiOS bug that causes phones to freeze upon receiving a text message with a malicious link.
Every product here is independently selected by Mashable journalists. If you buy something featured, we may earn an affiliate commission which helps support our work. We may have just gotten an early look at a ton of new Instagram features.

Instagram has been busy testing several new features, including a "close friends" feature, GIF search, and the ability to follow specific hashtags the way you'd follow an account, according to the tech site The Next Web.

One of the most interesting features the website found was something called "close friends," which will allow users to share posts with only a small group of their closest friends. This appears to be an extension of the "favorites" feature the app began testing earlier this year.

Originally created in response to the "finsta"phenomenon — users creating a separate stealth Instagram account for only close friends — favorites was billed as a way for people to maintain the ability to share with small groups of friends without having to juggle multiple accounts.

An Instagram spokesperson who spoke to Mashable declined to comment. Other notable features uncovered by TNW include : GIF search (via Giphy) to add animated GIFS to Stories, the ability to follow specific hashtags, native sharing to WhatsApp, and the ability to "archive" Stories

Additionally, the site found a new button on Instagram posts that they claim is a "regram" feature that will allow users to re-share posts from others. There's not a ton of information about this one, but according to TNW, it would replicate the functionality of third-party apps like Repost for Instagram.

However, it's important to note that The Next Web did not test the feature. It appears that the site's editors are judging the button's functionality based on its appearance and resemblance to third-party tools.

It's also important to remember Instagram, like Facebook, frequently tests new features in its app before deciding whether or not to launch them officially. Still, the experiments offer an interesting look at what types of features the company is thinking about and which areas they're looking to change.
Inbox by Gmail, Google’s next-gen email client for Gmail users, includes a number of features that aim to make handling your incoming messages easier. One of the best of these has long been Smart Reply, which uses Google’s machine learning intelligence to look at your email and suggest three possible (and very short) answers.

Until now, this feature was only available in the Inbox mobile app, but, starting today, it will also be available on the web. Google says 10 percent of replies in the mobile app already use Smart Reply.

In my experience, Smart Reply typically works pretty well and is often intelligent enough to give you at least one or two options that would work.

I tend to write slightly longer email replies (most Smart Reply options are three or four sentences long), but I’ve found this feature especially useful when I have to quickly respond to a message while I’m walking down the street or running through an airport.
While Apple’s iOS 9.3 update brings some great new features like Night Shift and password protection for Notes, it also appears to render Internet browsers almost useless for many users. This follows the news that older devices were bricking after downloading the iOS update a few days after it released.

Apple pulled the ability to update to iOS 9.3 on older devices for the time being.

Apple’s community support forums have seen a number of posts recently where users are reporting that clicking links will cause the phone to lock up, and not just in Safari.

Tapping links in any app, including the Chrome browser, Mail and social media like Twitter, will cause the phone to freeze Tapping links in any app, including the Chrome browser, Mail and social media like Twitter, will cause the phone to freeze.

For users who are having trouble when tapping links, some Apple Support Community posters suggested holding the link and opening it in a new tab or turning off JavaScript in Safari’s settings, but this doesn’t appear to fix the issue for everybody. Restarting your device or force closing the afflicted app also does not always make the problem go away.

User John UK Devon took a screenshot of his Live Chat with Apple Support, who said, “Apple is aware that there is an issue with the (sic) Safari becoming unresponsive. Apple is working extremely hard to release an update to resolve this issue.”
The company just announced that it's increasing the video time limit to a full 60 seconds.

Compared to the 15-second videos available on the platform before, this new one-minute time limit will feel like an eternity.

To announce the feature, Instagram put together a short video montage of recent videos posted on the platform.

The move is particularly interesting in that it moves away from the 10-second time limit popular in apps like Snapchat and inches Instagram closer to YouTube territory.

Think about it, with a time limit of one minute, clever video producers could easily begin crafting even more elaborate mini-documentaries of their lives, one one-minute snapshot at a time.

For anyone who lives on Instagram, this is an absolutely seductive update that could pull them even further away from the video confines of YouTube.

However, the update is described as "rolling out today ... available for everyone in the coming months," which likely means it may only be available to influencers during its initial stages.

Image and article source from Mashable. Among today’s Sequoia-sized devices, Apple has introduced the diminutive iPhone SE, a 4-inch device that pales next to the iPhone 6s Plus. But buoyed by the 30 million 4-inch iPhones it sold in 2015, Apple thought, “Hey, people still want small phones. Here is a small phone. Here is the ‘new’ iPhone SE.”

To be clear, the iPhone SE is essentially the iPhone 5s with guts that are high-end in Apple Land: A faster A9 chip, an improved camera, an NFC module for Apple Pay, and a little scribble on the back indicating that, yes, this is the iPhone SE, not to be confused with the iPhone 5s. It still comes with 16GB of storage, reminding iPhone owners that they will likely be haunted by the low storage option forever.

But, hey, it starts at just $399, or just over $13/month if you do installments. That’s a pretty enticing price for anyone looking to get their first smartphone, but it is by no means the cheapest device around—the 32GB Nexus 6P, a great and powerful handset, is the same price as the 64GB iPhone SE. Jump down a bracket and the Nexus 5X is just $299 (for a limited time).

Seeing this form factor emerge is like running into an old friend; there’s a familiarity here. I’d call it a happy reunion, because the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s were both terrific—great size, great build, great experience. But if you’re looking for the latest technology, you won’t find it here. Sure, the iPhone SE sports the same guts as the iPhone 6s, but it doesn’t have 3D Touch, something that will no doubt be a big part of Apple’s handset future.

Pre-orders for the iPhone SE kick off on March 24, with shipments expected to go out on March 31, or exactly ten days from now. If you want to pick one up, it’ll cost you $399 for the 16GB model, or $499 for the 64GB model.

Article source from Technobuffalo. Samsung modeled this tablet/PC hybrid on Apple’s brand new, giant iPad Pro.

Sure the TabPro S runs Windows 10 and has a detachable keyboard/screen cover, but the core chassis has more in common with the iPad Pro than it does Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4. Both have exactly two ports. The Surface Pro has a display Port, USB, a mini display port and a micro SD card slot. And while the Surface Pro 4 uses a built in, fully adjustable kickstand, the iPad Pro and TabPro S both use folding keyboard covers to prop them up.

I am, admittedly a big fan of the Surface Pro 4 and I really like the iPad Pro. Now I realize that I like almost anything that can offer me true laptop-level productivity in an ultralight form factor. The Samsung Galaxy TabPro S fits that bill.

The Intel Core M3-sporting, $899.99 system is not as attractive as the iPad Pro and the included (!) keyboard doesn’t have the same great chicklet keys, as large a trackpad or type feel as the Surface Type cover, but it generally acquits itself nicely in all areas.
Good Looks and lapability

The 12-inch tablet is slightly smaller than the iPad Pro, but roughly equal to the Surface Pro 4. It weighs a pound and a half without the screen cover, which means it has some heft, but is also roughly equivalent to the iPad Pro (1.53 lbs., for the TabPro S and 1.57 lbs. for the iPad Pro). The TabPro S can feel a little heavier because that weight is squeezed into a smaller frame. That feeling becomes more pronounced when you attach the keyboard cover which wraps around both sides of the device. Apple iPad Pro folds the keyboard under one side of the cover.

Screen wise, the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S features the first Super AMOLED on a Windows 10 tablet. At 2160 X 1440, it’s super sharp and impressively bright, though, both the Surface Pro 4 (2736 x 1824) and iPad Pro (2732 x 2048) offer higher resolutions. That screen technology let Samsung make the TabPro S even thinner than the Surface Pro 4, which uses LCD technology, and slightly thinner (less than a millimeter) than the iPad Pro. For better or worse that means there is no standard USB port.

Instead, it has a USB-C port that you’ll use for charging and data. If you’re like virtually everyone I know, you’ll have to buy a USB-C-to-USB adapter. I found one from Satechi and even though the system said it didn't recognize the USB device, it worked just fine.

Article and image source from Mashable. Instagram may soon be messing with your timeline, showing photos not based on chronological order, but based on popularity and other social signals.

In other words, your Instagram could soon be curated in a way similar to Facebook's News Feed. The move, which comes about a month after Twitter started new timeline experiments, was first reported by The New York Times.

With a userbase of almost 400 million users, Instagram has remained one of the few social networks that shows content in a strictly chronological manner. With the exception of sponsored posts — which are interspersed in your feed based on various cues — what you see in Instagram is reflective of the now.

The Times reports that Instagram is going to start testing a change to that system, using algorithms to help determine what you need to see when you open up the app. What you see first could be determined by your interaction history with a user, the time of day and the popularity of the photo.

In the Times report, Instagram co-founder CEO Kevin Systrom said that users miss about 70% of the posts in their feeds and that "this is about is making sure that the 30% you see is the best 30% possible."
Still, we can imagine that users won't necessarily love the fact that they no longer control the order in which they are shown photos.

Facebook faced backlash for its algorithmic take on the News Feed back in 2009 and Twitter has faced backlash for its attempts to switch-up its Timeline in recent months. In the case of Facebook, users ended up relenting and accepting the new reality (as users almost always do when Facebook makes a sudden change).

Instagram's other co-founder, CTO Mike Krieger, told The Times that the change to Instagram might not be as big of a deal to users because its feed is made up of photos and users often follow people from all over the world.

Even though change is coming, don't freak out too much quite yet. Systrom told The Times that the rollout will take time and that proper testing will go into perfecting the experience. "It's not like people will wake up tomorrow and have a different Instagram," he said.

That's a good thing. Still, just the announcement of this kind of change is sure to spark reactions. Change is finally coming. Over the weekend, we noticed the Instagram app now shows the exact date (month, date and year) a post was published on both our own and other peoples' posts.

So far, it appears the update is slowly rolling out to users in the background, so if you don't see it yet, be patient. Instagram changed that to "weeks" sometime late last year to make it consistent with the app.

This article source from Mashable.

As part of the flurry of retrospectives tied to Twitter’s 10th anniversary, the company is also looking back at the history of advertising on Twitter.

Granted, that probably doesn’t give you the same nostalgic twinkle as Jack setting up his “Twittr,” but, like it or not, it’s still an important part of the company’s story. So in a new blog post, Joel Lunenfeld, vice president of sales strategy, looks back at “10 ways marketers have changed with Twitter.”

Many of the trends Lunenfeld points to should be pretty familiar if you’ve been following Twitter, or social media advertising in general. There’s a discussion of real-time marketing, another focusing on a new wave of online creators and a third looking at the increasing importance of mobile. There are also nods to the future, with things like live video combined with new devices giving us underwater shots and helping users take flight (and discussing air quality) with London’s pigeons.

Perhaps the most important point, though, is the first one: “authentic brand voice.” Marketers have used Twitter to get looser, friendlier, even weirder — and while it’s easy to make fun of this trend, I’d much rather have a genuine-seeming interaction with a brand on Twitter than just getting the same marketing message as everyone else.

When Clayton Hove Tweeted that a bird had “crapped on a Smart Car” and “totaled it” in 2012, Smart Car USA swooped in with a hilarious graphic proving he must be mistaken. When Kit Kat threw down the gauntlet to Oreo and challenged them to a game of Tic-Tac-Toe, Oreo quickly responded, creating love for both brands. This type of brand interaction didn’t exist before.

This isn’t covered in today’s blog post, but it’s also worth noting that Twitter is making the case for the effectiveness of the social approach in conjunction with more traditional marketing. For example, it recently worked with media agency Starcom and social analytics company Canvs to show that TV viewers who engage on Twitter will also have higher rates of ad recall.
Barca defender Gerard Pique was sent-off after the break and Aritz Aduriz struck late on to seal it for Bilbao.

The visitors had Kike Sola sent-off late on, but the celebrations for Bilbao had already begun. It was ultimately a disappointing display for Barcelona who, despite plenty of possession, failed to threaten often enough. After Barcelona's humiliating defeat in the first leg, Athletic Bilbao knew Luis Enrique's side would be determined to make amends.

The reigning European champions lined up with Messi, Luis Suarez and Pedro in attack but the visitors had done their homework and the trio were well marshalled throughout. Whenever Messi had the ball, at least two players crowded round the Argentina international and his inability to get into the game left Suarez isolated.

Enrique heads into the new season with some concerns at the back. Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was named on the bench after conceding eight goals in his last two games, with Chile international Claudio Bravo starting in his place.

Barcelona's attacking intent often left them exposed at the back, and any hopes of getting the goals they needed ended when Pique was needlessly sent-off midway through the second half. The defender angrily remonstrated with the linesman and the referee produced a straight red.

After a brief spell of Barca dominance, Jeremy Mathieu gifted possession to Aduriz, leaving the forward one-on-one with Bravo and, after his initial effort was saved, Aduriz side-footed home the rebound to put the game beyond Barcelona [BBC Sport]. Remember when Facebook Messenger got its own site that maybe people use but we’re not sure because they don’t talk about it? Google Hangouts wanted some of that action, too. In a series of tweets Monday, the company confirmed the initial market pilot for Project Ara, which was slated to begin in Puerto Rico later this year, will instead be delayed until 2016.

Project Ara began in Google's secretive Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group. The aim is to create an Android-based smartphone platform where nearly every piece of hardware, including the battery, processor and camera, is a separate piece of the handset that can be replaced or customized without upgrading to a completely new device.

Google said the latest plan is to bring its modular smartphones to a "few locations" in the mainland United States for the initial rollout, but did not elaborate on the cause of the delay or the change of location. a spokesperson for Project Ara confirmed the delay to Mashable, but declined to provide additional details around the updated timeline.

The news comes less than a week after the company confirmed it would "re-route" the planned Puerto Rico pilot to a new location, though the company promised the modular smartphones would eventually make its way to the U.S. territory. Google previously said it chose Puerto Rico as a test ground for the experimental phones due to the island's "incredibly diverse" population, which is divided almost equally between smartphone users and more basic feature phone users.

The company had planned to make handsets available through the territory's two largest carriers, with a variety of devices sold via food truck-like storefronts. It's not yet clear how or where Google plans to distribute Project Ara devices during the mainland U.S rollout, but the company says more details about the changes will be coming soon [Source : Mashables].Themes Paperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12179566147787886404noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2459918164674997334.post-37456617477521859502015-08-11T20:59:00.000-07:002018-01-24T06:40:29.032-08:00BlackBerry Deleted A Tweet That it Accidentally Sent From an iPhone

Someone on BlackBerry's social media team just made an embarrassing mistake. A tweet from the company's Twitter account on Tuesday included a small detail at the bottom of the screenshot, revealing it was sent via iPhone. Clearly, even some BlackBerry employees use Apple products.

The tweet, which was first spotted and screenshotted by The Verge, has since been deleted.

This isn't the first time that a BlackBerry representative accidentally gave the iPhone an inadvertent stamp of approval. Alicia Keys, who was once BlackBerry's "Global Creative Director," ignited a mild social media scandal in 2013 when she tweeted from an iPhone instead of a BlackBerry.

Hours later, Keys dubiously blamed the situation on being hacked. She is no longer working with the company. The smartphone manufacturer, which has floundered in recent years amid stiff competition (mostly notably, Apple), is in the throes of an attempted comeback. It recently launched a throwback device called the BlackBerry Classic, tried to catch eyes with "unconventional" devices and even has a hand in the development of a self-destructing phone [Mashable]. Brazilian Neymar has claimed 22 goals in all competitions this season, already nine more than his total haul last term. Barca’s new attacking triumvirate of Neymar, Messi and Luis Suarez is really starting to show signs of promise, the trio scoring combined 59 goals for the club in all competitions so far.

They may play for rival South American countries but Neymar admitted to idolising the Argentine, admitting playing alongside Messi has enhanced his own game. “When you play next to Messi, everything is going to be easy, because I am playing with one of my idols,” he said. “It’s very easy to play with Messi. It’s very easy to play with a big star like him.”

Speaking in Doha yesterday at the launch of a second TV advert celebrating the partnership between Barcelona and principal shirt sponsors Qatar Airways, Neymar also revealed he doesn’t feel any stress playing for the Blaugrana or Brazil. The Los Angeles Lakers also made it official that their superstar doesn't believe his career is finished. Bryant is expected to need nine months to recover from his third straight season-ending injury. If Bryant meets that timetable, he could return to basketball shortly before the start of the 2015-16 season - and the Lakers expect to see him in purple and gold again. Neal ElAttrache and Steve Lombardo performed the two-hour surgery at the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

"I expect Kobe to make a full recovery, and if all goes as expected, he should be ready for the start of the season," ElAttrache said in a statement provided by the Lakers. The Lakers formally declared Bryant out for the year by acknowledging the expected recovery time from his injury, but also effectively confirmed he won't retire and will attempt to play his 20th season in the fall. Bryant, who will be 37 years old this summer, is the NBA's highest-paid player at $23.5 million this season, and he is under contract for $25 million next year. "In my mind right now, he's coming back next year, unless he tells me something different," coach Byron Scott said at practice Wednesday.

Scott already had acknowledged Bryant was highly unlikely to play again this season for the flailing Lakers (12-34), who will match their franchise record for futility if they lose their 10th consecutive game when the Chicago Bulls visit Thursday. But if Los Angeles finishes with a top-five draft pick, the club won't have to give its first-round choice to Phoenix until next year to complete its brutal trade for Steve Nash in 2012.

Bryant hurt his right shoulder while dunking last week in New Orleans, deciding on surgery shortly afterward. He is the third-leading scorer in league history and a five-time NBA champion. Bryant averaged 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 35 games, but made a career-worst 37.3 percent of his shots in a wildly inconsistent 19th season. He also passed Michael Jordan for third place on the NBA's career scoring list, trailing only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.

Bryant's popularity hasn't waned during his injury-plagued stretch. He was voted to the All-Star game for the 17th time this month, and he is still the Lakers' public face despite his recent prolonged absences from the court. bryant missed the 2013 playoffs after tearing his Achilles tendon late in the regular season, and he played in just six games last season before breaking a bone near his left knee. Although he has played through innumerable injuries in the past, the accumulated wear from nearly two decades in the NBA has caught up to him.

Bryant sat out eight games to rest in the past month, and he played under a strict minutes limit. It wasn't enough to protect him from another major injury. Bryant joins Nash, first-round pick Julius Randle and swingman Xavier Henry with season-ending injuries already for the Lakers [One News]. Dani Pedrosa completed the front row qualifiers on a day when Repsol Honda team-mate and reigning champion Marc Marquez saw hopes of pushing his pole record to 14 end with a fall in the closing minutes.

Marquez still has the chance to become the first ever MotoGP rider to win 13 races in a season on Sunday, when he will start from fifth on the grid, just behind Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo. Rossi is seeking to defend a twelve point advantage over Lorenzo for second in the world championship.

Pol Espargaro claimed the final place on the second row after getting the better of Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Bradley Smith. Fellow Englishman Cal Crutchlow will start his last race for Ducati from eighth after outpacing GP14.2 team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Aleix Espargaro (Forward Yamaha) and wild-card Michele Pirro (Ducati) rounded out the Q2 riders.

Suzuki will start its first grand prix since 2011 from 20th on the grid with wild-card Randy de Puniet, who suffered a second technical problem in final practice. Apple lovers will finally get their hands on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on Friday, and the reviews have been glowing. But if you preordered one or plan on waiting in massive lines, you should know: There are a few things missing from the new devices.

CollegeHumor took note of the new features, or lack thereof, and made this bittersweet parody expressing how everybody feels about the new phones (you know, the things nobody actually wants to admit).
